We have a long history with X.
In the early 80s LA's favorite punk rock band, X, were heard regularly
on many shows on KCRW and this is before they became world reknown
artists. They were starving musicians who were looking to get their
music out there and KCRW was the perfect place for that. I'm talking
about before cds, in fact, I just stumbled over their 2nd release, wild
gift, which is pretty tattered (a definite sign that the record got
played a lot). Exene and John Doe, seemed to visit on a regular basis. I
would be surprised if Deirdre O'Donoghue, a pivotal dj here at the time,
didn't play their demos first.
It feels right that they are part of the Spin Magazine party we are
sponsoring. They are part of the history of our city and of our radio
station. We are honored to continue championing young bands like Salt
and Samovar and Jesca Hoop (part of KCRW's official showcase) alongside
folks that have paved the way, like X!
-Ariana Morgenstern, Producer of Morning Becomes Eclectic
We will be broadcasting Morning Becomes Eclectic live from 11am to 2pm (Austin time) at Tequila Mockingbird studios! We have SONS AND DAUGHTERS coming in on Wednesday, March 12 and DUFFY will make her U.S. radio debut on Friday, March 14.
For the first time, we will be webcasting audio and video of these SXSW in-studio sessions! Tune back next week for more details.
Nic has sat down with more than a few music legends (including Paul McCartney last year!) and will chat with “Secret Agent Man” Johnny Rivers at the Austin Convention Center on Thursday, March 13 at 4:14pm. Johnny Rivers has sold more than 30 million records and was one of the founders of the Monterey Pop Festival.
8pm - JESCA HOOP
The invite-only event is packed to capacity this year because Spin always books great bands. This year is no different: X, VAMPIRE WEEKEND, THE RAVEONETTES, THE WHIGS, BEN JELEN, SWITCHES AND THE SCARLETT. We are thrilled to be a part of it and will be posting photos and reviews from the scene!
